Internet TV with Democracy

Democracy Logo

I use Democracy as my personal internet TV. Democracy is a cross-platform video podcast player and more. Of course, like everything in this candy store, it is free, and it is also open source. Just download Democracy, add a few channels, get some crisps and a drink and start watching your new internet TV.

When you have installed Democracy, it comes with a few channels installed. But there are a lot, and by that I mean a lot of channels out there. Democracy offers a Channel Guide where you can browse around and search for new channels in all kinds of categories. But you are not limited to what Democracy itself has on offer. The player works with any video podcast.

Democracy comes with it’s own built in player, based on the excellent VLC player, which means it can play a lot of movie formats without the need to install any other software on your computer.

A nice feature of Democracy is the automatic cleaning it does for you. If you watched a video, it is set to expire within 6 days (by default, you can change it later). If you decide you want to keep a video, you can click the save button and it won’t expire. I like this feature because it means you don’t have to actively clean up your harddisk; you just have to decide what to keep and everything else disappears after a while.

In the latest version another nifty feature has been added; you can search for video’s on YouTube, Google Video and a few others from within Democracy. You can play the results straight away in the player itself. But check this out aswell – you can save your search as a channel, getting automatic updates when new results are found! Let’s say you’re interested in people doing silly dancing, search for “silly dance”, save the search as a new channel, and voila, you just added a silly dance station to your personal TV :)

Finally a tip; you can subscribe to a channel that combines some of my favourite video podcasts in Democracy. Just click the subscribe button right here:
